Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport sold out

While some automakers are focused on creating as many hybrid vehicles as possible, recent news has proven that supercars are in fact still a big hit on the market. We have already reported the fact that the Ferrari FF and the Lamborghini Aventador are sold out for 2011, but now we’re hearing more of the same kind of news from another automaker: Bugatti. Apparently, the most powerful Veyron that has ever been built, the 16.4 Super Sport, is also sold out. Damn, and we were saving to buy one!
It seems that the first five Veyrons - dubbed the World Record Editions - were sold out before the car even launched and the remaining 25 of the 30 units Bugatti plans to build went just as fast! Apparently, everyone really does want a supercar that is capable of hitting a top speed of 267 mph, and we can’t blame them! Of course, not everyone has an extra $2.3 million sitting in their bank accounts or stowed under their mattresses, so a limited supply was probably a good idea.

Bugatti Veyron SS hits 267mph

Auto Advance | Bugatti Veyron SS hits 267mph | The Bugatti Veyron  SuperSport has set a new production car land speed record, hitting 267mph at VW's Ehra-Lessien proving ground. 267mph. Well, 267.91mph to be precise, or 431.072km/h, thrashing the 256.23mph set by the SSC Ultimate Aero in Nevada in 2007.

You don't need us to tell you this, but that is obscenely, absurdly fast. To set the production speed record is impressive. To smash it by 11mph is astonishing.

Then again, the Veyron SuperSport is an astonishing car. Effectively the final iteration of the Veyron, it shares the same 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder engine, but with larger turbos and bigger intercoolers to push power to 1,183bhp, a jump of 196bhp. Torque increases from 921lb ft to 1106lb ft.

It's lighter than the standard Veyron, too: that black'n'orange skin is constructed solely from carbon fibre, saving around 50kg. The Super Sport gets stiffer suspension, aiding high-speed stability and allowing lateral acceleration of 1.4g. Good work if you've spotted the new NACA ducts and reworked double diffuser.

The Super Sport will hit 62mph in the same 2.5 seconds as the standard Veyron (and never was such an adjective less appropriate), but its 0-124mph and 0-186mph times are reduced to 7.3 seconds and 15.0 seconds. 124mph in just over seven seconds. Yowch.

On the Ehra-Lessien test track, the Super Sports hit 427.933km/h (265.96mph) on its upwind run, before reaching 434.211km/h (269.86mph) on the return leg.

"We took it that we would reach an average value of 425km/h, but the conditions were perfect and allowed even more," Bugatti chief engineer Dr Wolfgang Schreiber said after.

Now, we wouldn't want to give anything away, but you know how Auto Advance has always been pretty intimately involved with high-speed runs in the Veyron? Remember, for example, James's blast to 253mph in Series 9? Auto Advance

Next-Generation Bugatti Veyron to hit 440km / h

Next-Generation Bugatti Veyron to hit 440km / h?
Bugatti still doesn’t think that the Veyron is fast enough. After coming up with the Super Sport version of the car a few months back, the VW group owned company is now working on the next generation version of the car. The company has set a top speed target of 270mph for itself. The Current Veyron is known to be good for 253mph.The Super Sport version on the other hand has done an average run of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph) in front of Guiness record officials.

Bugatti loses money on every car it makes owing to its technological excess. But the cash rich VW group is the last company in the world to bother about budgets if they could lay claim on being the manufacturers of the world’s fastest car. The company wants to push the envelope further.

According to Auto Express, the company would want the next version to shatter the perception of what a production car can do. The new warp-speed Bugatti Veyron is expected to make an appearance sometime in 2013.

Bugatti Veyron review on Top Gear

On Top Gear the car has received considerable praise from all three presenters. Jeremy Clarkson declared the Veyron "the greatest piece of engineering ever. No, I'm sorry, this is the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime." James May proclaimed that the Veyron is "our Concorde moment". To review the car, Clarkson drove from Alba, northern Italy to London whilst racing James May and Richard Hammond who were travelling in a Cessna 182 aeroplane.

Bugatti Veyron Braking

The Veyron's brakes use cross drilled, radially vented carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite discs, manufactured by SGL Carbon, which have a much greater resistance to brake fade when compared with conventional cast iron discs. The lightweight aluminium alloy monobloc brake calipers are made by AP Racing; the fronts have eight titanium pistons and the rear calipers have six pistons. Bugatti claims maximum deceleration of 1.3 G on road tyres. As an added safety feature, in the event of brake failure, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) has also been installed on the handbrake.

Prototypes have been subjected to repeated 1.0 G braking from 312 km/h (194 mph) to 80 km/h (50 mph) without fade. With the car's acceleration from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 312 km/h (194 mph), that test can be performed every 22 seconds. At speeds above 200 km/h (120 mph), the rear wing also acts as an airbrake, snapping to a 55-degree angle in 0.4 seconds once brakes are applied, providing an additional 0.68 G (4.9 m/s²) of deceleration (equivalent to the stopping power of an ordinary hatchback).

Bugatti claims the Veyron will brake from 400 km/h (250 mph) to a standstill in less than 10 seconds, though in this time you will have covered a third of a mile.
